We’re delighted to welcome back the

Third Coast Translators Collective

They’ll be launching three recent works by members of their collective.


Winifred Bird is the translator of Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai. She is a Japanese-to-English translator and writer living in Oregon, Illinois. She is also the translator of Mamoru Hosoda’s novel, Wolf Children: Ame & Yuki, forthcoming from Yen On this May.

Mamoru Hosoda is an internationally acclaimed animator, director, and author The movie version of Mirai was nominated for an Academy award and Golden Globe and won an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature.

Kay Heikkinen is the translator of Clouds Over Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid. She is the Ibn Rushd Lecturer in Arabic at the University of Chicago. She has also translated novels from Naguib Mahfouz and Radwa Ashour (Egypt), Mahmoud Saeed (Iraq), and Huzama Habayeb (Palestine).

Born in 1946, Ibrahim Abdel Meguid is an Egyptian writer from Alexandria. He was awarded the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature in 1997 for his novel The Other Place.

Matthew Smith is the translator of Sleep Preceded By Saying Poetry by Jacques Roubaud. His previous translations include Frédéric Forte’s Seven String Quartets (La Presse, 2014) and three novels by the Belgian writer Jean-Philippe Toussaint. He teaches French and Francophone Studies at Northern Illinois University.

Jacques Roubaud is one of France's leading contemporary poets and novelists. .
